Crate Systems
Terms of Service
Effective 27 September 2026, last updated 4 November 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Crate Systems (“we”, “us”) about Crate Mail and Cory, our applications for macOS; Crate Music, on the Mac and at music.trycrate.net (each of these, “the app”); share links at share.trycrate.net; the Crate account you use with them; and the website trycrate.net. By installing or using an app, sending or opening a share link, or joining the waitlist, you agree to them. If you use them for an organisation, you agree for it and confirm you may.
The Privacy Policy and the AI Usage Policy are part of these terms.

1. Pre-release software
Crate Mail is not generally available. Versions numbered 0.x are pre-release: they may contain errors, lose or mis-file data, change without notice, or stop working. Keep Gmail as the record of your mail; Crate Mail changes your mailbox through Google, so an archive, a label change, or a deletion made in the app is made in Gmail.
2. Your licence
For our Mac apps, we give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the app on Macs you own or control, for as long as these terms apply. You may not sell, rent, or sublicense it; copy it except to install it; or reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble it, except where the law allows that despite this term. Crate Mail runs on macOS 13 or later on Macs with Apple silicon.
The app checks for updates and offers them; it installs one only when you choose. We may stop supporting an older version, and a version we no longer support may stop connecting to our services.
3. Accounts
Each app needs a Crate account. Give accurate details, keep your sign-in to yourself, and tell us at hello@trycrate.net if you think someone else has used it. You are responsible for what is done with your account. You must be at least 16.
4. Your Google account and your mail
You connect a Google account you are entitled to use, and you remain bound by Google’s terms for it. Your mail is yours: we claim no rights in it, receive no copy of it, and do not read it. You are responsible for what you send from Crate Mail, as you would be from any other client, including the attachments and recipients you choose.
On the free plan, mail you send ends with the line “Sent from Crate Mail”, with the name linked to trycrate.net. Paid plans let you remove it.
5. Cory
Cory is the assistant in Crate Mail. It sorts mail into views you describe, suggests replies, and drafts messages. It is software that predicts text: it can be wrong, miss a message a view should have caught, or file one that does not belong, and a draft may say something you would not. Cory never sends mail on its own. A draft is sent only when you send it, and what you send is your responsibility. How Cory works and what it sends to its model provider is in the AI Usage Policy.
Cory is also an app of its own, on your Mac, that you message in iMessage. It replies to the messages addressed to it and, when you ask, works with files on your Mac and with services you connect. The same caution applies: check what it says and proposes, and what it does or sends on your instruction is your responsibility. AI features are metered per plan and may be capped per day.
6. Connectors and actions
If you connect a service such as GitHub, Linear, PagerDuty, or Stripe, Crate Mail can read an item from it and, when you press an action on a card, change something there: acknowledge an incident, approve a pull request, mark an issue done, add a comment. An action happens only when you press it, is carried out in your name, and is subject to that service’s terms. Acknowledging, approving, resolving, and marking done are offered only on mail verified as coming from that service. Commenting, where a service offers it, is available whoever the mail is from and posts what you type to the item the card names, so check which item that is before you post. Buttons that open a payment or signing page open it in your browser; check the address before you pay or sign anything.
7. Crate Music and share links
What you upload to Crate Music or send as a share link stays yours. You may upload and share only what you own or have the rights to share, and you are responsible for having those rights. You let us store it, make previews of it, measure it, deliver it to the people you share it with, make watermarked copies of it for download when you turn watermarking on, check a file you upload for a watermark, and send a document’s text to our AI provider when someone it is shared with asks Cory about it, as far as that is needed to run the service for you.
A share recipient’s access can be revoked at any time, by the sender or by us. A deleted track or file can be restored from Recently Deleted for 14 days, and is then permanently deleted.
Crate Music’s plans work as follows.
- Plans. Lite is free. Pro, Max and Studio are paid monthly or yearly, and yearly billing has its own lower price. Studio is sold per seat, for teams. What each plan holds and includes is shown in the app and on the pricing page before you buy.
- Who charges you. Crate Music is sold through Stripe Managed Payments: Stripe is the merchant of record, charges your card, collects any sales tax or VAT, and its terms apply to the payment. Prices are set in US dollars; outside the US you may be shown your own currency.
- Changing plans. An upgrade starts at once and you pay the difference for the rest of the period. A move to a lower plan, or from yearly to monthly, starts when the period you’ve paid for ends. Removing seats from a Studio workspace takes effect immediately. The rest of the current period isn’t refunded, and a seat added back is charged again.
- Storage. Each plan has a storage allowance, and it is enforced. If you are over your storage after a downgrade or when an add-on ends, uploads stop until you’re back under it. Nothing is deleted for being over. Storage add-ons are monthly, on top of a plan, and removing one takes effect when its paid month ends. The 5 TB add-on is available on Max and Studio.
- Stem splits. Lite includes 5 stem splits a month. The count resets on the 1st of each month (UTC), and unused splits don’t carry over. Pro, Max and Studio include unlimited stem splits for normal personal and professional use. On any plan, we may slow or pause splitting for automated, bulk, or abusive use, such as a very large number of splits in one day, and the app tells you when it does. These limits may change as section 16 describes.
- Features by plan. Some features depend on your plan: videos, passwords and watermarks on links, and who-listened data. If you move to a plan without one, what you already made keeps working, but you can’t make new ones.
If you turn on watermarking for a share link, each file downloaded from it carries an inaudible identifier linked to that link, as the Privacy Policy describes. A watermark helps trace a copy to the link it came from; it does not prevent copying, and we do not promise that every copy can be traced.
8. Acceptable use
Do not use our apps or services to:
- send spam or bulk mail that its recipients did not ask for, whether from Crate Mail or as share emails, or mail that deceives them about who sent it;
- send, upload, store, or share malware, phishing, or anything illegal, or that infringes someone else’s rights;
- gain access to an account, mailbox, or service you are not authorised to use;
- overload, probe, or interfere with our services, or get around their limits or security;
- extract keys, tokens, or other secrets from the app, or use them outside it;
- remove, alter, or obscure a watermark or other identifier in a file downloaded from a share link, or attempt to;
- use Cory to produce content that Anthropic’s usage policy prohibits.
We may suspend an account that does any of these things, and will tell you why unless the law or someone’s safety prevents it.
9. Plans and payment
Before you pay for a plan, its price, what it includes, the length of any trial, and how renewal works are shown to you, and those details form part of these terms. A subscription renews until you cancel it, and cancelling takes effect at the end of the period you have paid for. Free plans have limits stated in the app, such as Crate Mail’s limits on views, Cory drafts, mailboxes, and connectors, and Crate Music’s storage allowance and monthly stem splits. AI features are metered per plan and may be capped per day. Crate Music’s paid plans are sold through Stripe Managed Payments (section 7); Crate Mail’s and Cory’s are billed through Clerk, which uses Stripe to process payments. Either way your payment details are handled by Stripe, and we do not receive or store card numbers.
10. Other companies’ services
Our products rely on Google, Anthropic, Composio, Clerk, the other providers named in the Privacy Policy, and the services you connect. We do not control them and are not responsible for their availability or conduct, or for changes they make that stop a feature working. Your use of them is also governed by their own terms.
11. Ownership and feedback
The apps, the websites, and the Crate Mail, Cory, and Crate Music names and marks belong to Crate Systems. These terms give you the licence in section 2 and nothing else. If you send us feedback, we may use it without owing you anything. Gmail and Google Calendar are trademarks of Google LLC; other product names are their owners’ trademarks and are used only to name those products.
12. No warranty
Our apps and services are provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement, and that it will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free. Some places do not allow these exclusions, so some may not apply to you.
13. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, arising from our apps and services or these terms, even if we were told they were possible. Our total liability for all claims arising from them or these terms is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for the product concerned in the twelve months before the claim and US$50. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
14. Indemnity
If someone makes a claim against us because of mail you sent, something you uploaded or shared, an action you took on a connected service, or your breach of these terms, you will cover our reasonable costs and losses from that claim, to the extent the law allows.
15. Ending this agreement
You can stop at any time: remove your Google account in Crate Mail, delete the apps, and ask us to delete your Crate account. We may end these terms or suspend your access if you breach them, or end a product altogether with reasonable notice. Sections 11 to 14 and 16 continue after the agreement ends.
16. Law, disputes, and changes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and the courts in California have exclusive jurisdiction, except that either of us may seek urgent relief in any court that has jurisdiction. If you live in a country whose law gives you the right to bring a claim in your own courts, or protections these terms cannot remove, those rights are unaffected.
If we change these terms, the date at the top changes. If a change reduces your rights, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect, and it will not apply to a dispute that arose before then. If any part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest stands. Not enforcing a term is not a waiver of it. These terms, with the two policies above, are the whole agreement about these products. Write to legal@trycrate.net for legal notices and hello@trycrate.net for anything else.
